Understanding Wireless Regulations in China

China Wireless RegulationsPrior to 2013, the Wi-Fi airwaves were getting clogged in China as the 5GHz band was confined to 5725-5850 MHz. To solve this issue, China opened up the 5GHz band to add the 5150-5350 MHz frequencies to create more breathing space and a less congested Wi-Fi environment. Some of the changes are as follows:

  • Increased the number of 20 MHz channels from 5 to 13
  • Increased the number of 40 MHz channels from 2 to 6
  • Maximum power output is 200 mW EIRP
  • Maximum PSD (Power Spectral Density): 10 dBm/MHz (EIRP)
  • Out-of-band emission: -80 dBm/Hz (EIRP)
  • 5250 to 5350 MHz band is subject to Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) and Transmit Power Control requirements

Wi-Fi Channels Summary:

  • 2.4 GHz: Channels 1 – 13.
  • 5 GHz:
5150-5250 MHz 20 MHz Channels 36, 40, 44, 48
40 MHz Channels 38, 46
5250-5350 MHz 20 MHz Channels 52, 56, 60, 64
40 MHz Channels 54, 62
5725-5850 MHz 20 MHz Channels 149, 153, 157, 161, 165
40 MHz Channels 151, 159
80 MHz Channel 155 (for 802.11ac)

Considerations when dealing with wireless regulations in China

China does not accept modular certification of 802.11 Wi-Fi radio modules.  System approval is required to obtain the China Compulsory Certification (CCC).  In addition, the radio must also obtain State Radio Regulation Committee (SRRC) Radio Type Approval, with in-country testing required.

China Safety Update

There is a new requirement for power supplies sold in China. China standard GB 4943.1-2011 went into effect December 01, 2012 and requires warning labels for power supplies that do not meet creepage clearance from the primary-to-secondary circuitry. This applies to units used above 2,000 meters due to sparking danger in higher altitudes where the air is thinner and less humid. This standard may become a worldwide standard in the future as most power supplies are manufactured in China.

If your system is not capable of running the various Wi-Fi radio tests, like continuous transmit, then in most cases it is possible to demonstrate compliance using a third-party development platform. Silex Technology can help with this radio testing. Please contact sales@silexamerica.com to obtain more information.
